Tonight I finally downloaded DangerDoom, and in the past few hours have listened to it three times. I remembered hearing that Danger Mouse was good, and I know that MF Doom is literally the best MC today, so it seemed to make sense that this album would be worth a listening to. What I forgot was that a month ago or so while watching Adult Swim, a bumper came up talking about this album, showing the cover and promoting it. After listening to it, you’ll understand why. Almost every song (or possible every song) contains a sample or two from Space Ghost, ATHF, the Brak Show, Sealab 2021, or Harvey Birdman, and several contain skits specifically recorded for the album. Track 7 is called “Aqua Teen Hunger Force”.
Although I’d normally be extremely hesitant about enjoying anything that’s “inspired by” or written for a soundtrack or corporate compilation (which this isn’t, it’s more like “in cooperation with adult swim”), this album is great. Much like Madvillain, what makes MF Doom’s stuff so good is that (a) the lyrics are great and his voice isn’t annoying but is smooth and flows well with the beats, and (b) the actual music he raps over almost works on its own because its being made by ACTUAL DJs!!! It’s real hip-hop that isn’t over produced and made to sound good on radio or in clubs like most crap you find on MTV. Unlike his past material, because of the A.S. clips/skits it’s funny, with stuff like Master Shake leaving messages on answering machines trying to get in the studio with them. The only downside is that I’m in the process of re-downloading it, since my copy is the clean version, which doesn’t affect most songs but rather than doing it tastefully there’s just some loud *beep* over the dozen or so swears. If any y’all want it, leave a comment.
